Splashy, Mass Clashes of Indonesian Citizens in Taiwan

Since last weekend, the virtual universe of Hong Kong, Macau, and Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) has been noisy about the mass clashes carried out by Indonesians in Taiwan. Allegedly, clashes occurred between two groups of Indonesian silat schools in the State of Formosa.

The Taiwanese police have uncovered the alleged cause of the mass clash between two Indonesian silat schools that left one person dead at the end of last week. Based on the police's initial findings, there is disagreement regarding self-defence training.

The two martial arts school groups then met to discuss, but the situation then heated up. Clashes broke out outside the Changhua train station last Saturday (2/9/2023) night.

The Changhua Regional Police Department reported that one 32-year-old Indonesian citizen was stabbed in the back of his body and later died. Not only that, another man was also stabbed four times. Currently, the man is in critical condition in the hospital.

“Taiwan News reports that to date, the police have arrested 29 suspects for further investigation. The police have also opened an investigation for 15 other people related to involvement in serious crimes," CNN Indonesia announced, citing Taiwan News.

Of the total persons detained, 15 were transferred to the Changhua District Prosecutors' Office to be investigated for murder, assault and involvement in a deadly dispute. Meanwhile, the police also seized a number of items from the scene. Starting from knives, samurai, nunchaku, to screwdrivers.

The Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Judha Nugraha, said the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (IETO) in Taipei would facilitate the repatriation of the bodies of 1 Indonesian citizen who was the victim of this mass clash. He ensured that IETO would also coordinate with the Changhua authorities for legal assistance to the 15 detained Indonesian citizens.

"This fight between Indonesian citizens is very regrettable. They should be ambassadors for the Indonesian nation and be able to demonstrate the good attitude and behavior of the Indonesian nation abroad. We strongly urge that harmony among Indonesian citizens abroad can always be maintained," said Judha.
