DDHK. ORG - Hajj for Muslims is a pillar Islam fifth. The following is a discussion about hukum, basis, and purpose of the pilgrimage.
Ulama agreed that the law of pilgrimage is fardlu 'ain for those who can afford it. Allah Ta'ala says,
God bless ّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ
“Performing the hajj is a human obligation to Allah, namely (for) people who are able to travel to the Baitullah. Whoever denies (the obligation of pilgrimage), then indeed Allah is Rich (does not need anything) from the Worlds "(QS. Ali Imran: 97)
The Prophet SAW once said:
Amen لُ اللَّهِ ، وَإِقَامِ الصَّلاَةِ ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ ، وَالْحَجِّ ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ
“Islam is built on five things: bearing witness that there is no god worthy of worship besides Allah and confessing that Muhammad is His messenger, establishing prayers, paying zakat, performing pilgrimage, and fasting in the month of Ramadan (Bukhari)
The purpose of obligatory pilgrimage is to fulfill God's call to commemorate a series of activities that have been carried out by Prophet Ibrahim as the initiator of Islamic law. The story of the Prophet Abraham in connection with this is said by Allah in QS Ibrahim: 37;
رَبَّنَآ اِنِّيْٓ اَسْكَنْتُ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِيْ بِوَادٍ غَيْرِ ذِيْ زَرْعٍ عِنْدَ بَيْتِ كَ الْمُحَرَّمِۙ رَبَّنَا لِيُقِيْمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ فَاجْعَلْ اَفْـِٕدَةً مِّنَ النَّاسِ تَهْوِيْٓ اِ لَيْهِمْ وَارْزُقْهُمْ مِّنَ الثَّمَرٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْكُرُوْنَ
Meaning: “O our Lord, indeed I have placed some of my descendants in a valley that has no plants near Your respected house; O our Lord, so that they may establish prayer, so make the hearts of some people incline towards them and provide them with fruit; hopefully they are grateful.” [DDHK News]
