Ancient Chinese Women's Exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum

DDHK. ORG – Exhibition “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Women and Femininity in Ancient China – Treasures from the Nanjing Museum” can be an option fill holidays weekend while in Hong Kong.

The exhibition, which will end on 27 February 2023, will be held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum (HKHM). Located at 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin.

Reporting from Dimsumdaily. hk, 118 exquisite artefacts from the Nanjing Museum, covering ancient Chinese women's daily necessities and accessories; embroidery, paintings and artifacts created by talented ancient women; and paintings depicting women by famous writers in the past, were displayed in Hong Kong for the first time.

This moment is not to be missed. The exhibition consists of four sections showing the fashionable attitude, wisdom, lifestyle and talents of ancient Chinese women in various perspectives and showing the essence of Chinese traditional culture and arts.

Exhibition Section

The first section deals with changing fashions in ancient women's hairstyles, makeup and clothing. Main exhibits include a first-class national treasure, the 13-metre-long Qing dynasty hand scroll “The ancient palace mistress is relaxing”.

These silk paintings guide the viewer through more than 20 activity sites, such as bamboo forests, gardens, pavilions and terraces, to learn more about the various leisure activities of ancient women.

The painting is like an illustrated guide to an ancient leisure activity. The “pottery woman dancing figure” shows the graceful posture of a dancing woman in the Tang Dynasty, expressing the beauty of an ancient woman.

The second part of this exhibition allows visitors to explore the daily life of women in different social classes through displays of their daily necessities and accessories.

The first-class national treasure “Golden palace crown” on display is the headdress worn by titled noblewomen attending official occasions in the Qing Dynasty, symbolizing the status and nobility of ancient women.

The third section is a collection of paintings, calligraphy, embroidery and artifacts made by talented Chinese women from various dynasties, which demonstrate their talents and ingenuity.

Not-to-be-missed exhibits include the “Flowers and butterflies” hanging scroll made by the female painter Ma Quan in the Qing dynasty; and the embroidery “American Actress – Beecher”, a classic created by “Needle Sage”, the late Qing dynasty embroidery master, Shen Shou.

He integrates principles and techniques of chiaroscuro and perspectives borrowed from Western painting into traditional Suzhou embroidery, to realistically represent the textures of human skin and clothing.

Well, the last part of the exhibition is the artist's paintings of women, which allow visitors to explore the story of these legendary women.

Excellent exhibitions include the painting “Li Duanduan” by Tang Yin, one of the four masters of Ming dynasty painting, which tells the story of the poet Tang Cui Ya and the famous night lady Li Duanduan, and more.

The exhibition has introduced many multimedia interactive elements, and visitors can mix and match ancient women's hairstyles, accessories and make-up with interactive games and create their own ancient women's ideal models.

They can also customize their mobile wallpaper with lucky patterns from the exhibition, or take photos with Instagram filters drawn by Hong Kong artist Messy Desk.

Responding to the exhibition, HKHM specifically curated the “Women of Our City” section. Hear the compelling stories of four extraordinary and inspiring Hong Kong women, namely prominent image consultant Tina Liu, world-renowned cyclist Sarah Lee, radio presenter Bonnie Wong (Ah Jeng) and fire station attendant Scarlett Yiu, and by looking the museum's collection of pop culture, visitors can explore the image of contemporary women in Hong Kong.

Exhibition Entrance Fee

Entrance to the exhibit is $10 and half price for students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Free public guided tours in Cantonese are available daily (except Tuesday) at 12.45:15.15pm and 15:45pm. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, Putonghua and English tours are available at noon and XNUMX:XNUMXpm respectively.

The museum hosts a series of special programs free to the public, including embroidery workshops, classical Chinese dance performances and lectures.

The exhibition is jointly organized by the Department of Leisure and Cultural Services (LCSD) and the Nanjing Museum, co-organized by HKHM and Nanjing Museum, and under the exclusive sponsorship of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).

This is one of many initiatives supported by the HKJC-approved donation of $630 million to the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the HKSAR, demonstrating that HKJC is resolute in pursuing its goal of acting continuously for the betterment of society, all of them to support together create a stronger community.
