Fixed Foreign Domestic Worker Minimum Salary, Meal Allowance Increases

DDHK.ORG - The Minimum Allowable Salary (MAW) for foreign domestic workers (PRT) in Hong Kong will remain at HK$4,630 per month. This was announced by the Hong Kong Government on September 30, 2021.

“The government regularly reviews MAW for foreign domestic workers. In accordance with established practice, we have carefully considered Hong Kong's general economic and labor market conditions over the past year, as well as Hong Kong's near-term economic outlook, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in this year's review. Taking into account the above, the affordability of employers and the livelihoods of foreign domestic workers, the Government has decided that the minimum wage level for foreign domestic workers remains unchanged,” said a government spokesman.

In addition, under the Standard Employment Contract for hiring foreign domestic workers, employers are required to provide their workers with free meals. However, the employer may choose to pay a meal allowance instead. This meal allowance is set to increase by HK$52, from not less than HK$1,121 to not less than HK$1,173 per month.

"The government has also reviewed the food allowance in lieu of free meals, and decided to increase the level of the allowance," the spokesman said.

The new meal allowance amount will apply to all foreign domestic workers contracts signed on or after 1 October 2021. [DDHKNews]
