Schools Reopen April 19th

DDHK.ORG - The Hong Kong government will gradually relax social distancing rules over a period of 3 months, starting April 21, 2022. Provided, the epidemic situation continues on a downward trend, without any signs of a spike.

This was stated by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, during a press conference on Monday, March 21, 2022.

Related to this, Carrie Lam also talked about the plans for reopening schools and conducting face-to-face learning. "Regarding school reopening, Lam said primary schools, international schools and kindergartens would be the first to reopen on April 19," The Standard Hong Kong quoted Carrie Lam as saying.

As for secondary schools, the resumption of face-to-face teaching will have to wait until the end of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education exams which are scheduled to start on April 22. Hong Kong's Education Bureau previously said there would be a back-up plan and exams could be postponed until May or June, depending on the epidemic situation when they make a final decision in early April.

Carrie Lam also said students would not be required to get vaccinated to enter school, "but a high vaccination rate among students would create herd immunity among them, providing better conditions for school learning activities," she said.

Even though most of the restrictions on residents' activities have been lifted, Hong Kong people are still required to wear masks and practice social distancing in public places. The public will also be asked to continue using the LeaveHomeSafe contact tracing app along with a vaccine permit, which allows only those vaccinated to enter a list of regulated places, including restaurants, shopping centers and supermarkets.
