Israel Detains Thousands of Palestinians Without Clear Legal Cases

The non-governmental organization Palestinian Prisoner Society said that currently there are 7.800 Palestinians being held in Israeli prisons. The detainees include 33 women, 166 children, and 2.873 people who were detained without legal clarity or prosecuted under Israel's administrative detention policy.

Reported by Middle East Monitor, before the conflict broke out the number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons was estimated to be around 5.250 people. Of that number, 1.319 were detained without charge or trial. “Israeli forces detained 3.580 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 7,” the organization said in a statement.

In a ceasefire agreement between Israeli troops and the Hamas group on November 24, the two parties agreed to release Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons in exchange for the release of hostages from Gaza. During the 7-day ceasefire, 240 Palestinian prisoners were released from Israeli prisons. Meanwhile Hamas released 105 hostages in Gaza. This means there are still thousands of other Palestinians being held in Israeli prisons.

In a statement some time ago, Head of the Commission for Palestinian Prisoners and Former Prisoners Affairs, Qadura Fares, said that thousands of people were arrested under the pretext of "administrative detention". This means that thousands of people are imprisoned without knowing the charges or legal process they face.

According to Al Jazeera's report, there are currently 19 prisons in Israel and one in the West Bank, to detain Palestinians. “This is unlawful and cruel. "The consequences for imprisoned people and their loved ones are often not being able to see them for months and sometimes even years," said the Amnesty International report. (Source: CNN Indonesia)
