Is There Really a Giant 'Fish' in the Saudi Arabian Desert?

DDHK. ORG – A giant 'fish' in the desert Saudi Arabia, recently became a discussion on the Detik page. In the article it is explained, the image of a giant 'fish' in the middle of the desert is not mirage, really caught on camera.

Photographer Khaled Al Enazi captured the image of the unusual formation using a drone while filming archaeological treasures in Saudi Arabia's Al-Ula area.

Al-Ula is an area known for its ancient structures that are said to rival the city of Petra in Jordan.

"As I was documenting the area, a mountain view appeared in front of me, shaped like a fish in the middle of the desert," he said as reported by CNN.

Al Enazi said he may not have been the first to discover the rock formation, but he believes thanks to the aerial photographs he was able to notice its odd shape.

"A photographer's eye sees what people don't," he says.

In drone footage captured by Al Enazi in June this year, the rock formation resembles a water creature swimming through golden sand, its dorsal fin-like structures also suggesting it may be a shark emerging from the depths to stalk its prey.

The Desert Fish video shared in a tweet in July has been viewed more than 29.000 times.

Since this photo was shared, many netizens have assumed that the rock is the remains of a giant marine animal. Even so, Al Enazi brushed it off.

“Some people suggest that it is a real fish that was fossilized millions of years ago, but that is not the case. This is sandstone formed by many factors,” he explained.

Fish in Al-Ula

Al-Ula where this 'fish' is is one of the most dramatic desert landscapes in the world. It covers almost 9.000 square miles (22.500 square kilometers).

The ancient Nabataeans founded their main city in the south just north of the Al-Ula valley and carved a spectacular tomb into a rocky outcrop at Mada'in Saleh, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Some of Al-Ula's stones, sculpted by the elements, take on surprisingly sculptural-and human-shaped forms. There are also rocks known locally as Jabal Al-Fil, notable for their resemblance to elephants.
