Star Ferry, Hong Kong Icon for Over a Century

Star Ferries or The Star Ferry Company is the operator of passenger ferry services and a tourist attraction in Hong Kong. Its main route carries passengers along Victoria Harbour, between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

The company was founded in 1888 as the Kowloon Ferry Company, adopting its current name in 1898.

The fleet of 12 ferries currently operates two routes (previously 1 April 2011 4 routes) in the port, carrying over 70.000 passengers per day, or 26 million per year.

Although the port is criss-crossed by rail and road tunnels, the Ferry continues to offer cheap crossings.

The company's main route is between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui.

The company was ranked No.1 in the “Top 10 Most Attractive Ferries” in a poll by the Society of American Travel Writers (“SATW”) in February 2009.

Well, this Ferry crossing in Victoria Harbor is an important part of the mode of transportation between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

“Star” Ferry has been the first and only public transport operator in Hong Kong to provide free service to seniors aged 65 and over since 1992.
