The Netherlands Recognizes Indonesian Independence in Writing

After 65 years of Indonesian independence, the Netherlands will finally give written recognition. So far, the Netherlands has only given transfer of sovereignty, not recognition of sovereignty.

This written statement will be submitted during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's visit to the Netherlands, October 5-8. The Presidential Special Staff for Foreign Relations, Teuku Faizasyah, said the acknowledgment would be signed by the Dutch government.

With this visit, it is hoped that the two countries can look more forward, and not be dragged into by the burden of history. "This also shows the maturity of relations between the two countries," said Faizasyah at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta, Thursday, September 30, 2010.

Although he has not yet given written acknowledgment, de facto the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs has recognized Indonesia's independence by attending the commemoration of Independence Day, 17 August 2005.

During his visit, Yudhoyono will meet the Dutch Queen Beatrix and the Dutch Prime Minister. Indonesia-Netherlands will also sign a comprehensive partnership agreement. The state visit also scheduled a business meeting with big Dutch entrepreneurs. Yudhoyono will also speak at a university in the Netherlands.

According to Faizasyah, the President's visit was delayed for 4 years. The Queen of the Netherlands has given the invitation since 4 years ago. (Viva news)
