Can Tarawih be 10 or 12 cycles only?

DDHK. ORG – Rakat tarawih becomes an exciting thing to talk about every time Ramadan arrives. Between the 11th and 23rd, many still wonder how many rakaats should be observed. But deep consultation with chaplain this time there is a question, is it permissible for tarawih only 10 or 12?

Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

Ustadz may or not, pray the terawih 10 12 cycles only. The remaining 8 cycles are intended for the dawn prayer, only 3 cycles for witir. The movement to follow the priest, the intention is 6-8 cycles of qodho at dawn?

The questioner who is glorified by Allah Subhanãhu wa Ta'ala, before I answer the question, let us both ask Allah to be able to guard our prayer service, so that it is fulfilled according to its time even at the beginning.

Indeed there are some Ulama such as Imam Nawawi & Ibn Taimiyah RahimahumaAllaah who allow a Muslim to perform prayers outside of their time, meaning to multiplied their prayers while working which is impossible for them to leave such as a doctor who is operating on a patient, or a farmer whose clothes are dirty & haven't found anything who can clean it, or other things like it. But with a note that it is not used as a habit that is repeated.

If indeed we are at one time in such a condition, then it is permissible.

Then what if a congregation performs fardlu prayer behind the imam who is performing sunnah prayers? Is the makmum prayer valid? For example, there are people who perform the dawn prayer with the intention of making up for it, but behind the imam who is praying the sunnah tarawih in the month of Ramadan?

This is where the problem lies.

In the Hanafi & Maliki madzhab it is said:

On لإمام ليؤتم به فلا تختلفوا عليه)

"It is not valid to pray fardlunya someone (if he is makmum) behind people who perform sunnah prayers, as the hadith of the Prophet sallallãhu 'alaihi wasallam: (Indeed, an imam was made to be followed, so do not disagree with him)."

However, the Shafi'i & Hanbali schools of thought are of the opinion that such prayers are valid. According to him, it is not permissible for the congregation to disagree with the Imam in terms of prayer movements, not in their intentions.

Imam Nawawi Rahimahullah said in the Book of Al-Majmu' Syarhu Al-Muhadzdzab:

مذهبنا- نحن الشافعية – : أنه تصح صلاة النفل خلف الفرض , والفرض خلف النفل , وتصح صلاة فريضة خلف فريضة أخر؉ توافقها في صلاة في رضض وتصح فريضة خلف فريضة أقصر منها , وكل هذا جائز بلا خلاف عندنا – نحن الشافعية – .

“Our school of thought, Syafi'iyah, (is of the opinion) that sunnah prayers are valid when they end after the fardlu prayer, the fardlu prayer after the sunnah prayer, the fardlu prayer after the other fardlu prayers according to the number of cycles, such as the midday prayer after the asr prayer, so also fardlu prayer behind other fardlu prayers which are shorter cycles. All of this is permissible without any mistakes (disputes) in our Shafi'iyah school of thought.”

But the most important thing is how can we keep our prayers in order, even at the beginning of the time, so that's better.

May Allah ease our prayer affairs, so that all other matters become easy, amen...

Hope it works!

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
