Is it permissible to cut nails and hair when intending to sacrifice?

DDHK.ORG - Is it permissible to cut nails and hair when intending to sacrifice?

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

Is there a prohibition on cutting nails or hair 10 days before the sacrificial animal is slaughtered? Because my nails are a bit long and very disturbing activities.

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

ليكم السلام الله ات

Bismillah... For those who want to sacrifice, they are advised not to cut their nails or hair from the 1st of Dhulhijjah until the animal is slaughtered on Eid al-Adha, 10th of Dzulhijjah. This is based on the hadith narrated by Umm Salamah radliyallãhu 'anhã, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam said:

“إذا لالَ الحجةِ، اد أن ليُمسك وأظفارِهِ” (رواه لم)

"If you see the new moon of Dzulhijjah while one of you is about to make a sacrifice, then let him restrain (not cutting) his hair and nails." (HR Muslim)

The above hadith explains that there is an order that someone who wants to make a sacrifice not to cut his hair or nails before the sacrificial animal is slaughtered. But is this command mandatory or is it a sunnah recommendation?

There are two opinions about this, namely:

  1. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that not shaving, shortening, or cutting hair or nails is a sunnah. The prohibition above is only light (makruh tanzih/makruh which is close to halal or permissible) not heavy (makruh tahrim/makruh which is close to haram). So the person who shaves part of his hair or cuts his nails between the 1st and 10th of Dhul-Hijjah when he wants to sacrifice, then he is not sinning. It's just that not shaving or cutting is much better and gets an extra reward.
  2. Shaykh Bin Bz is of the opinion that shaving or cutting off part of the hair or nails is haram. That is, the person who wants to sacrifice is obliged not to cut his hair or nails until the animal sacrificed is slaughtered on 10 Dzulhijjah. That applies if he himself will slaughter the sacrificial animal. As for if he delegates the slaughter to another person, such as a qurbani committee or others, then it is permissible for him to cut his hair or nails.

The wisdom of not cutting or shaving for the person who sacrifices is:

  1. So that more and more members of his body will be witnesses of his goodness and more will be freed from the torments of hell,
  2. Resembling what the pilgrims do in the holy land.

So, if someone is bothered by his long nails so that it interferes with his daily activities, then it is permissible for him to cut his nails and the sacrifice is still valid.

Additional tips so that we are not disturbed by long nails or hair when we want to sacrifice and want not to cut the hair and nails until our sacrificial animal is slaughtered is to cut our hair or nails on the last day of the month of Dzulqa'dah. So that in the next ten days our nails will not be that long, God willing.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Hope it works!
