After 245 years of independence, the US has a Muslim mayor

DDHK.ORG - For the first time, after 245 years of independence, the United States (US) has a Muslim mayor. According to a report from the Associated Press, Indonesian CNN reported, Abdullah Hammoud, a member of the Michigan Regional Representative Council, United States, was elected Mayor of Dearborn, on Tuesday (2/11/2021).

Based on unofficial calculations on the Dearborn website, Hammoud has already pocketed 55 percent of the vote. With that number, he managed to beat former Wayne County commissioner, Gary Woronchak, who only won 45 percent of the vote.

Hammoud also made history. Apart from being the first Muslim, he also became the city's first Arab-American mayor.

“To the girls and boys who have been bullied because of their faith or ethnicity, to those of you who have felt that their names have been disliked, and to our parents and anyone else's parents who have been embarrassed because of their broken English but are still trying, today. is proof that you are an American like everyone else and a new era in Dearborn," Hammoud said.

Prior to running for mayor, Hammoud had served three terms in Michigan's House of Representatives. He has a master's degree in business administration and a master's degree in public health from the University of Michigan.

Dearborn itself is a city of 100 inhabitants and is one of the cities with the largest Arab-American population in the country. Over the last few decades, Dearborn has become more racially diverse. About a third of the city's population is of Middle Eastern descent and 4 percent of the population is black. [DDHKNews]
