WHO Revives Covid-19 Emergency Status

DDHK. ORG – Although the Health Organization World (WHO) officially revoked the global health emergency status on Friday (5/5/2023), Ministry Health (Ministry of Health) asked the public to remain vigilant and vigilant against the transmission of Covid-19.

Reporting from Kompas, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health Mohammad Syahril said the virus would still exist and coexist with humans. Even in yesterday's announcement, WHO still asked the public to remain careful.

"In the WHO announcement yesterday it was stated that we must be careful because Covid-19 is still around. Covid-19 is not an emergency, no. But he is still there, which can still be a potential for transmission from person to person," said Syahril, Saturday (6/5/2023).

Syahril revealed that caution needs to be continued considering that Indonesia is currently experiencing an increase in Covid-19 cases. Although not significant, this increase in cases was able to increase the national bed occupancy ratio (BOR).

Data sourced from the Online Hospital as of May 03, 2023 at 14.00 WIB and the Provincial Health Office shows, BOR in hospitals reached 8,1 percent nationally, both isolation and ICU beds, out of 42.293 existing beds.

Meanwhile, as of Friday (5/5/2023) at 12.00 WIB, daily cases of Covid-19 have increased by 2.122 cases in a day.

"Even in the WHO statement yesterday, if there is an extraordinary increase in cases and causes a lot of deaths, then the status may still be returned. But that's the last one, if you see, yes," said Syahril.

Syahril stated that the government would also revoke the Covid-19 emergency status in Indonesia. However, he asked all parties to wait for the status to be revoked. This is because, to revoke the global health emergency status for Covid-19, the government needs to revoke the regulations that have so far made Covid-19 a national disaster.

The determination of the status of Covid-19 as a national disaster is contained in Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 12 of 2020 concerning Determination of Non-Natural Disasters from the Spread of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a National Disaster.

"Yes, yes (WHO announcement is a consideration). So Indonesia also has to repeal it. Of course, the time has to wait, yes, because that is the authority of the Minister or the President," said Syahril.

Previously reported, WHO officially ended the status of "global health emergency" for Covid-19, Friday.

"With great hope, I declare Covid-19 to end as a global health emergency," WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said at a WHO press conference, as quoted by The New York Times.

WHO continues to remind that the lifting of the Covid-19 emergency status does not mean that the world is completely free from the corona virus. The corona virus can still infect at any time, just like HIV, which still exists today. However, the official revocation of the status of Covid-19 as a “public health emergency of international concern” by WHO is an important moment in various aspects of human life. The reason is, for approximately three years, the world community has experienced difficulties in undergoing activity restrictions due to the Covid-19 emergency status. [DDHK News]
