Thanks for the question. Allah SWT says:
اللَّيْلِ افِلَةً لَّكَ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ امًا ا
"And on some nights you should be steadfast as an additional worship for you: hopefully your Lord will raise you to a place of praise." (Surat al-Isra ': 79).
In another verse Allah says:
ا ا الْمُزَّمِّلُ اللَّيْلَ لاَّ لِيلاً انقُصْ لِيلاً
"O people who are covered, wake up (for prayer) at night except a little, that is half or less of it a little". (Surat al-Muzzammil: 1-3)
The two verses above are some of the evidences for the Sunnah of the Tahajjud prayer. Tahajjud prayer is a sunnah prayer that is done at night. The number of rak'ahs of this prayer is at least two rak'ahs and as much as possible is not limited.
The time for performing the Tahajjud prayer is after the Isha prayer until dawn. The time is divided into three parts:
- The first third, which is approximately from 19.00 to 22.00. This time is prime time.
- The second third, which is approximately from 22.00 to 01.00 in the morning. This time is more important.
- The third third, which is approximately from 01.00 until the entry of Fajr time. This time is the most important time.
Tahajud literally means trying to fight or leave sleep. Meanwhile, in terms of fiqh, it is a sunnah prayer at night which is done after sleeping.
The law of Tahajud prayer is sunnah based on the consensus of scholars. Its sunnah is muakkad or very strong because it was always carried out by the Prophet Muhammad . (Al-Bakri bin as-Sayyid Muhammad Syattha ad-Dimyathi, Hâsyiyyah I'ânatuth Thalibîn, I: 267; Muhammad as-Syirbini al-Khatib, al-Iqnâ' fî Halli Alfazhi Abî Syujâ', I: 116).
Tahajjud can be done after waking up at night. There is no maximum limit for the number of rak'ahs. Every night it should not be emptied of the Tahajjud prayer, even if it is two rak'ahs.
Tahajjud prayer procedures:
- Saying the intention of the Tahajud prayer: لِّيْ التَهَجُّدِ لِلّٰهِ الَى (Ushallî sunnatat tahajjudi rak'ataini lillâhi ta'âlâ). "I intend to pray the sunnah Tahajud two rak'ahs because of Allah Ta'ala."
- The intention in the heart coincides with takbîratul ihrâm, and so on until the greeting after two rak'ahs.
- After greeting or finished the entire prayer then read the prayer.
