Many Ex-Migrant Workers Are Sick and Overstay Need Education to Go Home

DDHK.ORG - Alin, a volunteer at the Peduli Kasih organization, revealed that many former Indonesian migrant workers are overstayed and sick in Hong Kong. Some of them insisted on surviving and refused to return to Indonesia, others were confused about where to ask for help and did not know what to do to return to Indonesia.

He suggested that various agencies collaborate with them to educate them so they want and can return to their hometowns. "I want to talk about this cooperation with Pak Imam Baihaqi (General Manager Dompet Dhuafa Hong Kong), "Said Alin.

This was conveyed by Alin regarding the assistance to the case of Nanik Suryati, a former Indonesian migrant worker in Hong Kong who was only able to return home on Sunday (4/10/2020). This 38-year-old woman who has worked in Hong Kong since 2015 admitted that she was forced to have an overstay status since February 2020. During the overstay, Nanik contracted on the second floor of an old building on Tai Nan Street, Sham Shui Po.

Nanik's initial overstay process is regrettable. He admitted that he had to resign from his job at the employer because of illness. In fact, if Nanik knew, if a foreign domestic worker was sick he was protected by Hong Kong law, he might not have to immediately leave his job and end up overstaying.

At Sham Shui Po, where Nanik contracted, Alin found that many former Indonesian migrant workers were also overstayed and sick. "Even though their condition is like that, they don't want to go home," said Alin.

"In my opinion, there is a pocket of problem migrant workers," he said.

At Nam Cheung, Alin also found an even more tragic fact. Many of the former Indonesian domestic workers are forced to become entangled in drug trafficking syndicates.

Regrettably, they remain in Hong Kong and are reluctant to return to their homeland, with an overstay status and risk facing serious criminal prosecution. “Tragically, they do that the result is only enough to eat. On that basis, it is necessary to educate them, ”said this woman from Yogyakarta. [DDHK News]
