Insulting Prophet Muhammad Is Not An Expression Of Freedom

DDHK.ORG - Insulting Prophet Muhammad cannot be called an expression of artistic freedom. On the other hand, insulting Prophet Muhammad is a violation of religious freedom.

This was conveyed by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, in a press conference at the end of the year, as quoted by TASS. Violations of religious freedom in the form of insults to the Prophet Muhammad , said Putin, could lead to retaliation from extremist groups, such as the attack on the editorial office of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, France, some time ago.

Even so, Putin praised artistic freedom in general. However, he said artistic freedom has limitations and should not infringe on other freedoms.

In 2020, President Vladimir Putin expressed anger over the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad by satirical media Charlie Hebdo and the murder of a teacher in France.

Putin said there was a fine balance between expressing oneself and insulting the feelings of whole groups of people. “(Those who) act recklessly, insulting the rights and feelings of religious people, must always remember that there will be an inevitable backlash. But, on the other hand, it should not be aggressive," Putin said at the time, as quoted from RT.

Putin's remarks referred to the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad by satirical media Charlie Hebdo and the beheading incident of a teacher named Samuel Paty. He said these two things are evidence that "multiculturalism has failed" in the West. [Source: CNN Indonesia] [DDHKNews]
