This is the Hong Kong Government's New Hotline for Mental Health Support

On Wednesday (27/12/2023) the Hong Kong government launched a new hotline number to support the mental health of its citizens. The hotline is said to, “provide integrated, 24-hour support for people with mental health needs”.

The hotline claims to coordinate counseling services provided by the government and non-government organizations, so that those in need can get help by calling the easy-to-remember telephone number 18111. “This is a 24-hour, real-time, person-to-person response to any call,” said Health Minister Lo Chung-mau.

“We have at least six staff online at all times. And if there is an increase in demand, a spike in demand at a certain time, there will be a ready-made service for that,” he said.

Minister Lo also appealed to the public, if there are family members or friends who have mental health needs, they are encouraged to contact the Mental Health Support Hotline. “Caregivers can also use this hotline to seek timely support. "We're ready to chat and we're all listening," he said.

Wong Yan-lung, former chairman of Hong Kong's Mental Health Advisory Committee, urged the public to take advantage of the new hotline. However, he emphasized that outreach efforts are also important.

“This hotline is just one of many actions that must be taken. For those who are more reluctant, such as caregivers, because of the problems they suffer, they are reluctant to seek help. "I think we have to reach out to them proactively," he said. [Source: RTHK]
