Government Sets Eid Al-Fitr 1444 H to Fall on 22 April 2023

DDHK. ORG – Eid al-Fitr or 1 Shawwal 1444 Hijriyah has been set for Saturday, April 22 2023. The decision was obtained after an isbat meeting was held to determine 1 Shawwal 1444 Hijriyah at the HM Rasjidi Auditorium Ministry of Religion (Ministry of Religion) RI, Jakarta, on Thursday (20/4/2023).

Reporting from Republika, the isbat session was held behind closed doors, and was attended by Commission VIII DPR RI, MUI leaders, ambassadors from friendly countries, representatives of Islamic organizations, and the Ministry of Religion's Hisab Rukyat Team.

As usual, the early Shawwal isbat meeting is always held on the 29th of Ramadan which this year coincides with April 20, 2023.

"The hilal assembly for 1 Shawwal 1444 H falls on Saturday April 22 2023," said the Minister of Religion (Menag), Yaqut Cholil Qoumas when delivering the results of the isbat meeting for the determination of 1 Syawal at the HM Rasjidi Auditorium of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion on Thursday (20/4/2023) evening .

Indonesia with MABIMS, in 2021 agree on a visibility criterion of 3 degrees and an elongation angle of 6,4 degrees. This agreement was agreed and very moderate.

This year, the government, represented by the Ministry of Religion, again held the Syawal 1 Hijriyah Isbat Session on Thursday (1444/20/4) this afternoon at the HM Rasjidi Auditorium of the Ministry of Religion, Jakarta.

The isbat meeting was held behind closed doors and was attended by Commission VIII DPR RI, MUI leaders, ambassadors from friendly countries, representatives of Islamic organizations, and the Ministry of Religion's Hisab Rukyat Team.

"As usual, the early Syawal isbat meeting is always held on the 29th of Ramadan. This year, it coincides with April 20, 2023," said the Director General of Islamic Community Guidance, Ministry of Religion, Kamaruddin Amin in a press release, in Jakarta, Thursday (13/4/2023).

The Ministry of Religion will use new criteria in determining the beginning of the Hijriyah month. This criterion refers to the results of the agreement between the Ministers of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (MABIMS) in 2021.

So far, the criteria for the first Hijriyah hilal (month) are a height of 2 degrees, an elongation of 3 degrees, and an age of 8 hours. Then, MABIMS agreed to change these criteria to a hilal height of 3 degrees and an elongation of 6,4 degrees.

This agreement was marked by the signing of a joint letter ad referendum in 2021 regarding the use of the new MABIMS criteria in Indonesia starting in 2022.

If you use these criteria, it is likely that the new moon will not be seen at today's Itsbat Session. Therefore, the government is expected to set Eid al-Fitr on April 22, 2023, completing the 30 days of Ramadan. Likewise with NU which uses the rukyat method.

Meanwhile, Muhammadiyah has previously determined that Eid al-Fitr falls on April 21, 2023. Muhammadiyah determined the decision based on the results of the intrinsic reckoning of the hilal as guided by the Tarjih Council and Tarjdid PP Muhammadiyah.

Chairman of the Majlis Tarjid and Tajdid PP Muhammadiyah Prof. Syamsul Anwar explained last February that on Thursday Legi, 29 Ramadhan 1444 H coincided with April 20 2023. Ijtima ahead of Shawwal 1444 H took place at 11:15:06 WIB.

Previously, the Minister of Religion Yaqut issued a circular on the implementation of Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri/2023 AD.

In Circular Number SE 05 of 2023, the Minister of Religion Yaqut appealed to Muslims to maintain ukhuwah Islamiyah in addressing the differences in the beginning of Shawwal 1444 Hijri/2023 AD.

"Muslims are advised to maintain Islamic brotherhood and tolerance in responding to possible differences in the determination of 1 Shawwal 1444 H/2023 M," said Minister of Religion Yaqut recently.

Regarding the material for the Eid al-Fitr sermon, Minister of Religion Yaqut in his circular hoped that the message conveyed upholds ukhuwah Islamiyah, prioritizes the values of tolerance, national unity and integrity, and does not contain practical politics. [DDHK News]
