Tawaf (thawaf) literally means turning. Meanwhile, in terms of rotating around the Kaaba.
There are five types of Tawaf. Namely, tawaf ifadlah, tawaf qudum, tawaf wada', tawaf sunnah, and tawaf umrah.
Tawaf ifadlah is part of the pillars of Hajj. If abandoned, the pilgrimage is not valid, it cannot be replaced with a fine (dam). Likewise with the umrah tawaf, including the pillars of umrah worship which if abandoned have the same consequences as tawaf ifadlah.
Tawaf qudum is a sunnah law, performed when someone enters the city of Makkah. The tawaf wada' is included in the obligations of Hajj. If it is abandoned, then it is sinful and must be replaced with a fine (dam), but not to the point where the pilgrimage is damaged.
Meanwhile, tawaf sunnah is a worship that is recommended for everyone who enters the Grand Mosque as a form of respect for the Grand Mosque. Like tawaf qudum, this tawaf is not obligatory. If leaving does not result in damage to the pilgrimage, nor will it result in the obligation to pay the dam.
In its implementation, tawaf must meet the requirements as explained by Sheikh Muhammad Nawawi al-Bantani, through al-Tsimar al-Yani'ah Syarh Riyadl al-Badi'ah, namely:
- Holy from unclean and hadats (small or big
- Close genitals
- Starting Tawaf from the Pillars of Hajar Aswad
- aligning the left shoulder with the black stone at the beginning and end of the round.
- Make the position of the Kaaba to the left
- all limbs and clothing are outside the building of the Kaaba, Syadzarwan and Hijr Isma'il.
- Tawaf is done 7 times round
- Do not aim other than tawaf when rotating
- Located inside the Grand Mosque. Wallaahu a'lam.
May Allah make it easy for all of us to perform Tawaf perfectly in every series of Hajj and Umrah.
