Causeway Bay Preparing For Possible Big Demo This Afternoon

NEWS FROM HONG KONG

CAUSEWAY BAY | HONG KONG - The Causeway Bay area, the main gathering place for Hong Kong Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) to spend their time on vacation, is getting ready for the possibility of massive demonstrations this afternoon, Sunday (29/9/2019). Many shops close early.

"Hysan Place, Sogo Department Store, and the World Trade Center are among the shopping centers that announced they will close," the Hong Kong Radio Television (RTHK) publication agency reported, Sunday, at 12:19 am.

As spread on social media before, there was a call to stage what is known as a "global anti-totalitarian march" this afternoon. Similar protests are planned around the world.

Previously, unauthorized actions usually ended in clashes between demonstrators and police. The clashes that have occurred recently have become increasingly tense, as the protesters began to fight back using Molotov cocktails and throwing stones at the police.

In Hong Kong, the march is planned to start from Sogo on Causeway Bay to the Hong Kong Government headquarters at Admiralty. However, the event did not get permission from the police.

"Meanwhile security has been tightened around the government office complex at Admiralty after Saturday's clashes (28/9/2019). A water cannon truck, armored vehicle, and several police vans were seen parked inside the compound, ”wrote RTHK.

Outside the complex, at least 2 levels of barricades have been prepared by the police. The main access route to the area, the overpass from the Admiralty Center, has been blocked by barriers and steel gates. At the Legislative Council building, water-filled barriers have been put up outside the protest area. [DDHKNews]
