Multiply Prayer When It's Raining, Sick or Extreme Weather

DDHK. ORG – Multiply prayers when it rains, sick, or extreme weather what is the law yes? Is there any relief?

Imam Malik In the book Al Mudawamah it is stated that it is permissible to multiply Maghrib and Isya prayers at night when it is raining or it is dark and muddy.

The term extreme weather has not been found literally in the old fiqh books, but the words rain, dark and muddy (Mali, Al Mudawanah, 1/203) indicate extreme weather changes.

This is because madinah where Imam Malik lives does not experience a rainy season like Indonesia and several other countries, especially after global warming occurs where the weather can change instantly.

Based on these considerations, then multiplying prayers when it rains or extreme weather is an alternative that can be used as a way out.

This is reinforced by the expression of Abu Salamah bin Abdurrahman who said that one of the sunnahs is to pluralize maghrib and isya' during the rainy season.

This opinion was agreed upon by Imam Syafi'i, Ahmad bin Hanbal and Ishak bin Rohuyah. However, they differ on the matter of multiplying the noon and afternoon prayers when it rains.

Imam Ibnu Kuddaamah from the Hanbali school said, the correct opinion is not permissible. In fact, Imam Ibnu Kuddamah said, reciting the plural noon and asr with maghrib and Isya' is irrelevant.

This is due to the masyaqqoh (difficulties) during the Maghrib and Isha' prayers which are zulmah (darkness). (Alsyarrh Al Kabir, 2/117)

The conclusion is that it is not permissible for the scholars to perform the noon and afternoon prayers during rainy or extreme weather, so it is better not to do it.

Second, pluralizing Maghrib and Isha' because of rain and extreme weather is permissible and can even be called sunnah.

When compared between masyaqqoh caused by rain or extreme weather and illness or old age, masyaqqoh in the second case looks heavier than the first. Therefore, people who are sick or old deserve more relief than changing weather conditions.

This opinion is supported by Imam Ahmad and some of the Shafi'iyyah scholars, in Al Syarh Al Kabir Imam Ibn Kudamaa gives details that sickness which is permitted because of plural prayers is sickness which has a high level of masyaqqoh and a very weak condition.

As for aging, the Prophet SAW allowed Sahlah bin Suhail and Hamnah bin Jahasy to pray because of istihaadhoh (blood flowing from a woman's genitals outside of menstruation).

Apart from that, it is also permissible for someone who has problems with urinating that cannot be held back. Wallahu 'Alam. [DDHK News]
