3V, the key to being successful as MC

DDHK.ORG - The skill of being a master of ceremony or MC is part of public speaking, which is the art of speaking in public. To become a successful MC, it is enough to explore 3V.

This was conveyed by Myra Azzahra, a professional MC and TV presenter, when giving material at the MC Training that was held Dompet Dhuafa Hong Kong (DDHK) virtually for migrant workers Indonesia in the Land of Concrete, Sunday, November 29, 2020.

"To be able to understand public speaking, we just need to deepen the 3Vs: visual, verbal and vocal," Myra said.

Visually, an MC must ensure that his appearance looks perfect from head to toe. Myra also suggested that the MC should use make-up, even though it is thin, to look fresh and be different from the audience.

“Don't forget eye contact either. When speaking on stage, look as much as possible in the eyes of all the audience. If looking at their eyes makes them nervous, we can look at their foreheads, to get around, "he said.

Verbal, the articulation of an MC in speaking must be clear. Besides, it can adjust the speaking speed. Neither too slow nor too fast.

"Be careful too, not to do redundancy, namely repeating words. To minimize redundancy, it's better to speak a little but perfectly, rather than being long but curled, ”said the woman who won the award as the best female presenter of the 2018 and 2019 Central Java KPID broadcasting award.

Vocal, someone who becomes MC or moderator must know how to manage his voice, so that it is easier for people to hear. An MC is required to speak loudly and have power.

Also, it can adjust intonation or pitch up and down. Apart from training the voice in order to reduce sound accentuation, so that it sounds better, and does not sound "medok" typical of certain regions.

With regard to vocals, an MC must train himself to sound from the stomach or diaphragm, not from the throat. So that the sound has power or strength.

An MC must also be able to provide pressing or emphasis when saying certain words or sentences, in order to get a spontaneous response from the audience. "What is no less important, practice breathing. The trick, take a breath, hold it, exhale slowly, like practicing yoga. It is trained in a count of 1 × 8, every day. When you are strong, you can train to be 9, 10, 11, and so on. minimum, 5 minutes a day, "said Myra.

Do's and Don'ts While MCing

There are several things a MC (Do) must do. Namely, give a first impression that can amaze the audience, bring out a positive aura by doing it with heart and fun, have careful preparation, appear low profile, have a sense of humor, must be smart or smart, and be professional.

Meanwhile, what an MC (Don't) should not do includes monotonous movements that can present a negative stigma from the audience, laughing without control, not giving the opportunity to talk to other people, being unable to position themselves, and experiencing physical anxiety. "Physical anxiety can be seen from the face and body gestures. If you are still nervous, it means you have physical anxiety. It's okay, the important thing is that we are able to anticipate and control it so that it doesn't become physical anxiety seen by the audience, "said Myra.

Listening Skills

Besides being skilled in speaking, listening skills are also important for an MC. “Because talking and listening are like two sides of a coin that complement each other. When we can't listen well, then we can't be good MCs, ”said the former East Java TVRI news anchor.

Listening skills mean an MC must be responsive, totality or complete when listening to information, able to provide solutions to the audience, and be able to control things that happen outside the control and scenario of the event.

Important for Indonesian Migrant Workers

The General Manager of DDHK, M. Imam Baihaqi, said that the MC training was attended by 90 participants. Generally, they are people who are active in various organizations.

Especially, for the head of the organization, the person who is usually appointed to be the MC, or the person who usually speaks in public, "he said while giving the opening speech for the event.

He emphasized that this MC training is an excellent opportunity for Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong and Macau, to learn from the experts directly. “Myra Azzahra, he is a director and presenter MY TV Semarang.
