Prayers in a Sleepy State

Prayers in a Sleepy State

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

If during prayer your eyes like to open and close like you are sleepy, is the prayer valid?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Peace be upon you and God's mercy and blessings be upon you

Thanks for the question. The scholars say that it is still legal to pray while sleeping, but it is makruh. Even though it is legal, it is better to avoid praying in a sleepy state.

There are several hadiths that are used as evidence by the scholars regarding the impermissibility of praying in this sleepy state. Among them, is a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari, that the Prophet SAW said:

ا لِّى لْيَرْقُدْ النَّوْمُ فَإِنَّ ا لَّى اعِسٌ لاَ لَعَلَّهُ فَيَسُبَّ نَفْسَهُ

"If any of you is sleepy in his prayer, let him sleep first until he loses sleep. Because if one of you continues to pray, while he is sleepy, he will not know, maybe he meant to ask forgiveness but in fact he was reproaching himself."

Therefore, if the prayer time is still long, and we are tired and sleepy, it is better to rest first until the sleepiness disappears, then pray. But if the time is short, it is strived for prayer to be carried out properly.

In the fiqh concept of the Shafi'i School, falling asleep is considered one of the things that have the potential to invalidate wudlu. With a note, if the sleeping person is in a lying position, prone, sitting while leaning against something, or standing. So the prayer should be repeated.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
