Dompet Dhuafa Deploy Volunteers and Ambulances to the Batu Flash Flood Location

DDHK.ORG - Since Thursday, November 4, 2021, Disaster Management Center (DMC) Dompet Dhuafa (DD) and DD East Java sent a team to Batu City, East Java Province. This was done as a quick response to help search for victims of the flash flood that hit.

"A flash flood hit Batu City in East Java, after heavy rains flushed the upstream area of ​​the Brantas Watershed (DAS) on the slopes of Mount Arjuno, Thursday (4/11/2021), at 14.00 WIB," said Fery, DD team liaison at the disaster site, reporting the chronology of events.

Based on an interim report from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Batu City, the flash flood incident caused 15 people to be swept away by the overflowing river.

Based on the DD team's assessment, flash floods hit several villages in Bumiaji District. Namely, Sumber Brantas Village, Bulu Kerto Village, Tulung Rejo Village, Padang Rejo Village, and Sidomulyo Village.

“We sent several volunteers and ambulances to the location of the banjir bandang. We also brought 1 set of warm posts and several sets of PPE to the location," said Fery.

As a result of this flash flood, 15 people are estimated to be missing due to being washed away. As of Friday afternoon, November 5, 2021, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Batu City confirmed that this flash flood had claimed the lives of 6 people. Six of them have been found safe. Another 6 are still being searched.

"From these findings, the number of victims who died temporarily became 6 people," said Plt. Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in a written statement, as reported by CNN Indonesia.

The victims who died named Wiji and Sarip, residents of Bulukerto Village, were a married couple whose house was located right on the right side of the Sambong River. Wiji was found not far from the location of his house, while Sarip was found almost 2 kilometers from where he was swept away by the current.

Apart from Wiji and Sarip, the other victims who died were Mahendra Feri and Alverta Shenazia Arvisa Vindra who were the father of a child from Gintung Hamlet. Including two other victims, Adi Wibowo from Bulukerto Village and Wakri, residents of Ginting Hamlet.

All casualties have been evacuated to Karsa Husada Batu General Hospital. The survivors were rushed to the nearest hospital.

The material losses recorded so far include 17 damaged houses, 28 damaged motorcycles, three damaged cars, 8 livestock animals being swept away by the river currents and six livestock cages being heavily damaged. [DDHKNews]
