Norway May Allow Hijab for Female Police

The Norwegian government has formed a committee to make recommendations regarding whether police and judges may be allowed to wear religious attributes, including the headscarf.

The formation of this committee is a middle way for the Norwegian government to avoid pressure from religious groups and society.

Chairman of the Committee, Sturla Stalsett, explained that Norway will not choose the same policy as France which prohibits the headscarf and veil.

“In essence, we absolutely don't want religious symbols to be hidden. We even expect a strong diversity from Norway, ”he was quoted as saying thelocal. no, Monday (16/1).

Another committee member, who declined to be identified, said Norwegian society should naturally learn to be tolerant of the existence of other religions. "It is time, we accept an imam in the corridor of the hospital or a police officer wearing a veil," he said.

The Norwegian Administrative Court decided last year to grant a ban on the country's female police officers from wearing the headscarf. This ruling is a response to the government's efforts to allow female police officers to wear the headscarf.

The verdict was considered by the Norwegian Equality Court to violate religious freedom and anti-discrimination laws by depriving women of access to the police profession.

"Objectively, the police are part of Norwegian society," said the court's official statement. (The Local / Republika). *
