Tram fare proposed to increase to HK$3

DDHK.ORG - Hong Kong Tramways has submitted an application to the government to increase the fare for public transport passengers, often referred to as "teng-teng" among Indonesian migrant workers. For passengers aged 12 years and over the proposed increase is HK$0,4 to HK$3. Meanwhile, the tariff for children increased by HK$0,2 to HK$1,5 and HK$0,1 for the elderly to HK$1,3.

Hong Kong Tramways also proposed increasing the monthly ticket fare by HK$40 to HK$260 and canceling the 4-Day Pass, which currently retails for HK$34. “Tram companies said that passengers in 2020 fell 24 percent (calendarly) year-on-year, and although they bounced back by 16 percent last year, the numbers have not returned to pre-pandemic levels, and recorded a loss of HK$3 million,” it said. reported by The Standard, citing related documents.

This tariff adjustment is urgently needed by companies in the midst of the financial crisis they are currently facing. This is because it is impossible for them to continue their operations if they do not receive subsidies from the Employment Support Scheme.

According to documents submitted to the Legislative Council by the Bureau of Transport and Housing, the tram company last raised fares in July 2018, and proposed increasing fares for adults to HK$2,9 and for children to HK$1,4. [DDHKNews]
