Charlie Hebdo's Republishing of Cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad Injures Hundreds of Million Muslims in the World

DDHK.ORG - The republishing of the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad by Charlie Hebdo Magazine in France has again drawn criticism. This time it came from Indonesia, a country with the largest number of Muslims in the world.

The Indonesian Government expressed criticism through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi. "This action (the re-publication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoon) is an act that is irresponsible, provocative, and has injured hundreds of millions of Muslims in the world," he said in an online press conference, Friday (4/9/2020).

Foreign Minister Retno emphasized that the actions taken by Charlie Hebdo Magazine were against democracy and had the potential to cause division between religious believers. Even though at this time, he said, the world was in need of unity and togetherness to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

Charlie Hebdo is a French satire magazine. Founded in 1970 and has been famous for a long time for its risky cartoons and courage to mock politicians, famous figures, and religious symbols.

The announcement of the re-publication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoon in the magazine was made on Tuesday (1/9/2020) to mark the start of the trial for the attack on their office in 2015. (source: CNN Indonesia) [DDHK. ORG]
