The Law of Prayer While Holding the Guidebook

The Law of Prayer While Holding the Guidebook

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

Is it legal if we pray while carrying a book of prayer procedures along with the prayers?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

ليكم السلام الله ات

Bismillah... What scholars have discussed is whether it is permissible to pray by carrying and reading the manuscripts of the Qur'an. Syafi'iyah and Hanabilah scholars allow this, both in fardlu and sunnah prayers. The Maliki scholars are of the opinion that it is makruh if it is fardlu prayer and it is permissible if it is in the sunnah prayer. Meanwhile, Hanafiyah and Dhohiriyah scholars argue that the act of reading the Mushaf when praying can damage prayer because it is included in the type of doing additional movements or activities in prayer.

From the differences of opinion above, we can conclude that it is permissible to read the Mushaf in prayer, but memorizing the verses of the Qur'an and then reading it in prayer without looking at the Mushaf is much better than reading it with the Mushaf. Because without reading the manuscripts it will make our prayers more focused and solemn, especially if our eyes are fixed on the place of prostration. Because if you read the Mushaf in prayer, it is certain that our eyes will not focus on the place of prostration.

Then what is the ruling if you pray while carrying and reading a prayer guide and reading it? If we qiyas (analogize) with the law of reading the Mushaf in prayer, then it seems permissible.

However, what we must pay attention to is that reading a prayer guide book during prayer is not the same as reading a manuscript. Because the prayer readings are simpler and tend not to change so they are easy to memorize.

In contrast to the Qur'an which has 30 chapters, 114 surahs, and 6.236 verses, not all Muslims memorize them. Whereas the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- was very variant in reading the letter after the fatihah from short to long verses or letters.

So that there are people who feel they have little memorization, so they cannot read long verses or letters without looking at the Mushaf when praying. So he read the Mushaf when praying.

My advice is if you have not memorized the prayer readings, then learn while memorizing each prayer reading. As for if you have not memorized it and you are afraid to leave the prayer because you have not memorized the reading, then reading the prayer reading book is permissible, but only temporarily, not for a long period of time. Because you are still burdened with learning and memorizing each prayer reading so that later you can pray more relaxed and solemnly without having to read the ordinance book and prayer readings when praying.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.
