Ruling on Following Non-Muslim Death Ceremonies

Ruling on Following Non-Muslim Death Ceremonies

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

What is the ruling on a Muslim attending a non-Muslim death ceremony until the body is cremated (burned), and paying respects to the non-Muslim corpse?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Peace be upon you and God's mercy and blessings be upon you

Among the beauty of Islam is doing good to fellow human beings, even if they are non-Muslims. Not only to parents, even to friends or neighbors are also encouraged to do good.

If any of them have died, we are encouraged to visit and offer our condolences as a tribute. Even when the non-Muslim is not there to take care of his body, then a Muslim is obliged to take care of his body by wrapping it and burying it.

This is in accordance with the verse:

لَا اكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ لَمْ اتِلُوكُمْ الدِّينِ لَمْ ارِكُمْ ا لَيْهِمْ اللَّهَ الْمُقْسِطِينَ. ال:8

"Allah does not forbid you to do good and to do justice to those who do not fight you because of religion and do not (also) expel you from your country. Verily, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Qs. 60:8).

So it is recommended to muamalah with non-Muslims by attending his funeral. The important thing is not to accept their prayers.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
