Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

What is the intention and the reading if we want to pray for the late grandfather, grandmother, or someone who has died?

Please enlighten.

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

Praying for people who have died is a recommendation from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam, especially for fellow Muslims. Moreover, there are still families such as fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, brothers, and even children.

In a hadith the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam said:

"When a son of Adam dies, his deeds are cut off, except for three; i.e. alms Jariyah, or knowledge that is taken advantage of, or a pious child who prays for it." (HR Muslim)

So the best gift we can send to a deceased family is a prayer for them. Because prayer can lift reinforcements (danger, torment), even though a dead person is being tortured in his grave, then with prayer he can be kept away from the ugliness of the torment. As for if he is one of the members of heaven, then by praying for him he will be elevated in rank in heaven later.

Among the prayers that we can say to Allah for the dead are:

"O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, and make his abode is Paradise."

"O Allah, save him from the torment of the grave and the torment of hell."

"O Allah, make his grave a garden from the gardens of Paradise, and do not make his grave a pit from the pits of hell."

And of course there are many other prayers that we can send to the deceased.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Hope it works!

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
