Assalamualaikum warahmatulloh wabarokaatuh.

Ustadz asks for an explanation, from studies I have heard that if there are pictures of living things and the like on display in the house, then the angel of mercy will not enter the house. What about children's toys that sometimes resemble animals? Jazakallah khair.

Thanks.

Greetings, Fulanah

It is true that angels will not enter a house where there is a picture or statue of an animate living creature.

From Abu Talhah radliyallãhu 'anhu, Rasulullah shallallãhu 'alaihi wasallam said:

"Indeed, angels do not enter a house in which there are dogs and pictures." (Narrated by Bukhari Muslim)

The angel referred to in the above hadith is the angel of mercy. Not an angel recording the deeds of human deeds.

Then what about children's toys that resemble animals and are in the house, what are the laws?

Jumhur (majority) Ulama from the Malikiyah, Syafi'iyah, & Hanabilah circles exclude the above prohibition by allowing children's toys that resemble animals such as dolls, etc. Al-Qadli' Iyadl, a scholar of the Maliki school of thought, even quoted this opinion from the majority of scholars. Then Imam Nawawi also mentioned it in the shahih Muslim syarah.

The above permissibility according to the jumhur of scholars applies to toys that have a physical or not, whether in the form of a human or animal physique, even non-existent animals such as a horse that has two wings, as long as it is not in a prohibited form such as a wicked human figure, worshiped other than Allah, or unclean and unclean animals such as dogs and pigs.

Some scholars with the Hanbali (Hanabilah) school provide a condition for the toy to be headless, but the majority of scholars do not require it.

The argument for the permissibility of children's toys in the form of toys in the form of dolls or animals is the hadith of 'Aisyah radliyallãhu 'anha, she said,

“I used to play with dolls by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa salam. I have several friends who used to play with me. When the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa salam entered the house, they hid from him. Then he handed me the toys one by one and they played with me." (Reported by Bukhari).

'Aisyah radliyallãhu 'anha also said:

“The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam once arrived from the Tabuk or Khoibar war, while 'Aisyah's room was closed with a cloth. When the wind blows, the cloth is revealed so that the toy doll 'Aisyah is visible. He then asked, "O 'Aisyah, what is this?" 'Aisyah replied, "That's my doll toy." Then he also saw a statue of a horse that had two wings. He asked, "Then what do I see in the middle of these dolls?" 'Aisha replied, "Puppet horse." He asked again, "Then what is on top of it what?" 'Aisha replied, "Two wings." He asked again, "The horse has two wings!" 'Aisha replied, "Haven't you ever heard that Prophet Sulayman had a horse that had many wings?" 'Aisyah said, "He then laughed until I could see his teeth." (Reported by Abu Dawud and Nasa'i)

According to the scholars, this ability is due to the desire for girls to be more creative and compassionate.

Wallahu a'lam.

Hope it is useful…

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
