Afghanistan rocked by earthquake, death toll nearly 1.000

DDHK.ORG - The death toll from the 6,1-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan has reached 950. Hundreds of other people were reportedly injured.

Officials from the Taliban, the country's De Facto ruler, said the toll would continue to rise. “The number [of victims] will continue to grow. People are digging graves after burying [people]," said Mohammad Amin Huzaifa, head of the Department of Information and Culture at the Taliban's version of Paktika, as quoted by AFP on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.

Earlier, the supreme leader of the Taliban, Haibatullah Akhunzada, said the death toll from the disaster would continue to rise. So far, the SAR team is still looking for people who have disappeared or been hit by buildings.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6,1 rocked Afghanistan on Wednesday (22/6/022) morning local time. In addition to the loss of life, the shaking also caused a number of buildings to collapse.

Photos and videos related to the earthquake were widely circulated on social media. Some footage shows residents lifting victims into military helicopters.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake was about 44 kilometers from Khorst, a town near the Pakistani border, and had a depth of 51 kilometers. This is not the first time an earthquake has occurred in Afghanistan. In January, dozens of people were killed and injured after two earthquakes hit the western province of Badgis.

The South Asian country is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountains, which lie between the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. [Source: CNN Indonesia] [DDHKNews]
