East Rail Line Extended, Sheung Shui to Admiralty Only 40 Minutes without Changing Lines

DDHK.ORG - On Saturday, May 14, 2022, Chief Executive Carrie Lam inaugurated the opening of the cross-port extension of the MTR East Rail rail line. The day after, Sunday, May 15, 2022, the new route was opened to the public.

On Sunday, at 05:25, a special train departed from the Exhibition Center station to mark the opening of the new extension. The recently inaugurated extended route will allow Hong Kong residents to make the 46-kilometer direct journey from Sheung Shui to Admiralty in just about 40 minutes, without having to change lanes.

Carrie Lam was among the first to take the train from Hung Hom to the newly built Exhibition Center station. Also accompanying Hong Kong's Head of Government, head of transportation, Frank Chan, and chairman of MTR Corporation, Rex Auyeung.

“The East Rail line will connect Victoria Harbor Metropolis, dubbed an international financial hub, and the proposed Northern Metropolis, which will make Hong Kong a global hub of innovation and technology. With that, we are able to achieve the vision of two metropolitan areas in the north and south advancing side by side and complementing each other," said Carrie Lam.

He added that the Hong Kong government was looking into the possibility of extending the rail line to the Luohu district of the neighboring city, Shenzhen, to connect with the Greater Bay Area. [Source: RTHK] [DDHKNews]
