On the plane it is difficult to perform ablution, here's how to read the Qur'an

ARTICLES > CONSULTATION:

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

If we are on a plane, is it permissible to do tayammun to read the Qur'an?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Peace be upon you and God's mercy and blessings be upon you

In reading the Qur'an, one must be pure, as Allah says:

لَّا اِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُوْنَۙ

"No one touches it except the purified servants."

It is recommended to the questioner first to prepare the best possible conditions so that when on the plane there is no presence. Or, you can perform ablution before the flight.

However, if one day it is difficult to find water, then you are welcome to tayammum. In tayammum there are different types of intention. But if he intends with his tayammum to perform the fardhu prayer then his intention is sufficient to hold and read the Qur'an as well.

If his intention is only to hold and read the Mushaf of the Qur'an then he is allowed to do tayammum but is not allowed to pray fardhu or sunnah prayers.

As for if he only reads the Qur'an, for example through rote memorization without holding the Mushaf, then it is permissible without performing ablution.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.
