Islamic View of Taking Care of Sick Parents

Islamic View of Taking Care of Sick Parents

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

I have a very sick and aging mother, but I can't take care of her because of work and away. Have I sinned, Mr. Ustadz?

Then, what about the views of Islam on this matter?

Shukron Ustadz, barakallah.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

Thanks for the question. Caring for parents or birrul walidain is the main practice, the law is fardhu ain, and this practice is the right of parents over their children. Moreover, if you are old or in a state of prolonged illness.

Allah SWT says in the Qur'an Surah al Isra 23-24:

رَبُّكَ لَّا ا لَّا اهُ الْوَالِدَيْنِ انًا إِمَّا لُغَنَّ الْكِبَرَ ا لَاهُمَا لَا لْ لَهُمَا لَا ا لْ لَهُمَا لًا ا لًا ا لًا ا لًا ا لًا ا لًا ا لًا ا

"And your Lord has commanded that you should not worship other than Him and be good to your parents as well as possible. If one of them or both of them reach old age in your care, then never say to them the word 'ah' and do not shout at them and say to them a noble word."

Surah Al Isra verses 23-24 above talk about fathers and mothers. Parents are very important figures for every human being. It is impossible for us to be born on this earth to adulthood without the care and love of our parents. As it is, in his old age we can care for and glorify him.

اخْفِضْ لَهُمَا احَ الذُّلِّ الرَّحْمَةِ لْ ارْحَمْهُمَا ا انِي ا

"And humble yourselves towards them both with affection and say: 'O my Lord, have mercy on them both, as they both taught me when I was little."

Caring for elderly parents can be a field of worship for children. It can gain glory with Allah and open the doors of Allah's mercy. For children who take care of their elderly parents, it will get blessings in their lives.

Therefore, ask Allah for guidance through istikharah prayers, and try to be able to take care of parents directly by completing work contracts properly. May Allah make it easy.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
