US Announces End of Covid-19 Pandemic, RI Waits for WHO Directions

DDHK.ORG - On Monday, September 19, 2022, the President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, said that the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States was over. Biden's remarks coincided with the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who recently said that the end of the Covid-19 pandemic was "at hand".

Then, what about Indonesia? The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) stated that the government would wait for further directions and policies from the WHO regarding the revocation of the status of the corona virus pandemic (Covid-19) becoming endemic in Indonesia.

"We'll see later how the policies or guidelines from WHO are," said the Head of the Communications and Public Service Bureau of the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, as reported by CNNIndonesia.com, Wednesday (21/9/2022).

According to Nadia, Indonesia does not need to rush and still has to be careful because the development of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia still has the potential to experience an increase in cases, especially if there are findings of new Covid-19 mutations. He conveyed that the daily confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Indonesia were still above 2 cases, plus the achievement of the third dose of Covid-19 vaccination or booster was still low in the community.

"Our PPKM is still monitoring its progress, including how the WHO pandemic policy is a global agreement. So later we will see the development of other countries' policies, it will certainly be our benchmark as well," said Nadia.

The same thing was also said by President Joko Widodo. "For Indonesia, I think we have to be careful, stay alert, don't be in a hurry," said Jokowi after inaugurating the Cibitung-Cilincing Toll Road, Tuesday (20/9/2022).

According to Jokowi, only the World Health Organization (WHO) can declare the pandemic is over. "This pandemic is happening all over the world, and the one who can give a statement stating that the pandemic is over is WHO," he said.

"There is no need to immediately declare that the pandemic is over, I think you should be careful, in one or two countries where the Covid-XNUMX is also starting to rise, be careful, caution must be applied," said the President. [DDHKNews]
